I know that you all know what Tinder is. But in case you don’t – Tinder is a dating app. You get to see a picture of the other person, their first name, and a tiny bit of profile information – and then you swipe ‘like’ or ‘dislike’.
If you swipe ‘yes’ to them and they do the same to you, then you’re a match. At which point, you can begin messaging each other.
It might sound very shallow and meaningless, but as an actor you need to know: casting directors are judging you in much the same way.
Here are five reasons why your acting showreel is a lot like Tinder.
1. People make an INSTANT gut reaction. They either like you or they don’t.
2. Once someone’s decided about you, there’s no going back.
3. Trying to convince people you look how you looked ten years ago will fool no-one.
4. Showing a bit of variety is good, but you need to display a strong sense of identity to win someone over.
5. You’ll get dismissed by lots of people. Don’t take it personality, it’s never for the reasons you imagine.
