My friend Mandy

I remember when we played toy darts in Hamleys.
mandyspringsteenI remember us singing along to ‘Born to Run’ at a Bruce Springsteen concert so loudly that our ears nearly fell off our heads.
I remember her crying during ‘My City of Ruins’ and us both writing an almost identical account of it.
I remember casting her in as many films as I could.
I remember our cinema days and our tea-coffee nights.
I remember her ordering weird bread in Le Pain Quotidien.
I remember when she shared her poetry
with me.
I remember when we realised we have the same precise birthdate.

I remember how much she loved her family.
I remember how much she loved her husband.
I remember how much she cared about pretty much everybody.
I remember the times she hurt.
I remember the times she laughed.
I remember when we ended up in an art exhibit which consisted entirely of naked women (I promise it was not my idea).
I remember her wanting help coming up with a name for her blog.
I remember the first few months when she’d share drafts with me to make sure her writing wasn’t terrible.
I remember her realising her writing was great and there was nothing to do but just put it out there herself.
I remember we went to Frankie & Benny’s after her life turned bad.
I remember telling her to listen to Pearl Jam’s ‘Just Breathe’ even though it would make her cry.
I remember that she listened to Pearl Jam’s ‘Just Breathe’, cried, but said it’s exactly what she needed.

I remember her turning her life around despite when things went bad.
I remember her jumping out of moving airplanes.
I remember her raising money for charity time and again.
I remember her writing in an email ‘I still dream big, I hope I never stop’.
I remember her texting me whenever she’d watched films I’d recommended.
I remember she left a pair of muddy shoes at my parents house for far longer than is acceptable.
I remember her grumpy moods.
I remember her great moods.
I remember her talent.
I remember my friend.
I remember Mandy.
