Work / Short Films

Short films are a great way to experiment. They are usually a spur of the moment thing. I wrote, cast, and shot “Crazy Love” in New York over a four day period, using a handheld camera. The budget for the film was $4. You see the scene where he throws the coffee on the ground? That was our only expense: two coffees.

I create short films as a way of experimenting with ideas and working with upcoming, talented actors. Here is a selection of my short films from over the years, for your viewing pleasure!

A SINGLE GUY

‘A Single Guy’ is different to my other films in that it has a crew and some lighting kit. I worked with the fabulously talented Director Of Photography Fabio Dominguez, who gave the film a look I really love.

We made the movie over one day and two nights; in Essex and East London.

Cast : Katharine Innes, Greg Wohead, Nigel Bernard, Vera Chok, Ryan Elliott, Claire Jared, Jessica Rudd

CRAZY LOVE

It was 2008, I was in New York and desperate to make a movie. But I didn’t know any actors and the only equipment I had was a little handheld JVC camera. I didn’t let it stop me.

I wrote the screenplay in Marcy Avenue, Brooklyn, on a sleepless November night, and over the next two days I hunted down the best actors I could find. I shot it over two days with no crew, on a budget of $4.

It’s a romantic comedy, and it’s probably my favourite of my short films.

Cast : Adam Lerman, Carol Padiernos, Lisa Bierman, Sebastian Guerriero, Natali Jones, Heather Meagher

alone

A year after I made ‘Crazy Love’ (link to it) I was back in New York and eager to do something similar. I love the actors in New York, they’re so talented and natural. I purposely wrote a short film with as many characters as I could, because it gave me a chance to work with some amazing talent. This is a film about being alone; and how loneliness hits us all in many different ways, which somehow unites us.

Cast : Donna Brookbanks, Sebastian Guerriero, Betsy Holt, Keli Laing, Eden Marryshow, Heather Meagher, Shoshana McCallum, Brandon McCluskey, Carol Padiernos, Nicole Schneider, Luke Vennesky

Mix CD

I was always that guy who wouldn’t tell a girl he liked her, but I’d make her a tape or CD instead. It never worked for me, but in movies you can paint things differently.

This is a short film about the art of making a Mix CD for someone you care about. We shot it in two days on a budget of £100. It screened in the short film corner at the Cannes Film Festival in 2007.

Cast : Alasdair McEwen, Emily Denniston

MESS

This was one of the first films I directed. Considering I was 19 and didn’t really know what I was doing – I’m really proud of it. I wanted to do something in a realistic, documentary style — where the content and interactions were more important than the camera.

Not only was it one of my first films as I writer/director, but it was very early work for the talented actors Will Hartley and Georgia Goodrick
