You don’t have a showreel yet because you’re waiting to be cast in a special project that will showcase your skills. Or you filmed that project, and you’re waiting to get the material back.
Or you got the material back, and it was no good, or you were no good, so you’re waiting a little longer – until you get cast in a movie or until you die, whichever comes sooner.
Delaying your showreel is like delaying telling someone you love them. The patience seems wise until you realise: they’re now in love with someone else, they’ve found a new leading lady.
When you don’t have a showreel, you’re lost at sea. Just another fish in a very huge ocean. I just did a search on Casting Call Pro for a blonde actress, 20-25, with blue eyes. I got 500+ results. The max Casting Call Pro will show is 500 (so if you’re the 501st or higher, you’re impossible to find).
But then I searched ‘with showreel‘ and the number goes down dramatically, to 244.
I just did a search for a white male actor, 25-30, in London with brown hair and brown eyes. There were 296 results. Then I did the search to include only those with a reel. There were 100.
This is where a showreel from scratch comes into play. I can write you bunch of scenes, direct them, and then edit them into a reel all within a matter of weeks. Then there’s no waiting around. You take your career into your own hands. Now, when people ask to see your showreel, you’re not ashamed, because you actually have one: and it’s good.
Used to be that a showreel from scratch was embarrassing. This thing you did if you’d never been cast in anything good. But now nobody is cast in anything good, because the competition is too high. You may have great talent, but there are 700 people who look like you.
A new showreel sets you apart. It shows you’re serious. And most importantly: it shows you acting.
